Kekeno, A short film

Over a year ago I decided to take on a little personal project of filming and documenting the Kekeno (or New Zealand fur seal) colony living in Kaikoura, New Zealand. The pups have a sweet but unusual habit of going up the Ohau Stream while their mothers are off hunting. Every winter hundreds of pups can be found frolicking in the stream and waterfalls, learning their all important social and life skills as tourists flock to visit this naturally friendly species.

It’s important to note, while seeing these lively seal pups in the wild is a truly amazing experience, keeping your distance, respecting their environment (no littering or smoking around them) and driving carefully on the highway is crucial to keeping this spot open and available to nature lovers. Remember these are wild animals and need to be treated with the upmost respect!
